They glamorize and promote unhealthy lifestyles through many shows such as :
What do these shows have in common? They are very popular. They are on continuous re-runs on television. They appeal to young generations because the shows themselves have young characters. These shows mirror future generation’s perceptions of what is okay to do. ’16 and pregnant’ glamorizes becoming pregnant at a young age and that you too (the audience/viewer/ and in most cases young teenage girls) can be on television if you are young and pregnant. Many of these girls receive money for sharing their lives and stories while others attain 15 minutes of fame and further promote the possibilities that can come to your doorstep if you too become pregnant at such a young age. Although many of the creators and even some other viewers may disagree and strongly believe that is shows the hardships of becoming pregnant. But, if a person was to really watch the show closely many of the scenes in the show has to do with the relationships and the drama and pressure a baby brings into a person’s life. Little does the show allow for viewers to see the medical problems that can occur, the insurance bills (if the individuals have insurance), and the risks of pregnancy. The show neglects to educate their viewers about teen pregnancy and that it is not a paycheck but an express pass to adulthood full of responsibility and stress.
‘Celebrity Rehab’ is a popular show that is often played on VH1 where Dr. Drew guides and aids former celebrities into sobriety. Although the show shows the struggles many of the individuals face towards full recovery many of the younger generations get the wrong impression of rehab. The show is filled with ultra skinny models, wealthy rock n' rollers, and even well known actors. Nowadays, going to rehab is no longer seen as taboo but a fad. As celebrities such as Lindsay lohan, Demi Lavato, and Nicole Richie put themselves into detox clinics (or rehab) they send their peers and fans the wrong message as role models. Yes, going to rehab is a good step for recovery for those that desperately need help but the way in which these celebrities conduct themselves in the process of going into rehab, seems as though they are using it to expose themselves and gain more fame, instead of worrying about their role as role models to teenagers. Saddly, the average person as well as these celebrities are driven by money, fame, and scandle.
